New Two-Wheeler Safety Rules in India: Speed Alerts, Reflective Tyres and Other Changes Explained

India could soon introduce a broader set of safety requirements for two-wheelers as the government looks at new measures designed to reduce road accidents and improve rider and pedestrian safety. The proposed changes include features such as overspeeding alerts, reflective tyres and additional safety equipment for motorcycles and scooters.

The proposals are being considered under AIS-223, a safety framework aimed at improving the design and equipment standards of two-wheelers sold in India.

Speed Alerts Could Become More Important

One of the proposed changes focuses on overspeeding. Two-wheelers could be required to provide alerts when riders cross certain speed limits, helping encourage safer riding habits.

Speeding remains a major road-safety concern in India, particularly for two-wheeler users. An alert system could give riders an immediate warning without necessarily restricting the vehicle’s performance.

Reflective Tyres and Better Visibility

Another proposal involves reflective elements on tyres. These could make motorcycles and scooters easier to spot in low-light conditions, particularly at night.

Improved visibility can be especially useful on roads with poor lighting, where pedestrians and other motorists may have difficulty noticing two-wheelers.

Additional Protection for Riders

The proposed safety overhaul also includes measures such as leg guards and pedestrian warning systems. Changes to silencer design are reportedly being considered as well.

These requirements are intended to address different aspects of road safety, from protecting riders during accidents to reducing risks for pedestrians and other road users.

What Could Change for Two-Wheeler Owners?

If the proposals are introduced, manufacturers may need to update the design and equipment of new motorcycles and scooters to meet the revised standards. This could gradually make safety features more common across India’s two-wheeler market.

For existing owners, the impact could depend on how the final rules are implemented. New requirements generally apply to vehicles and manufacturers covered by the relevant regulations, so riders should wait for the government’s final notification before assuming that modifications will be mandatory.

A Push Towards Safer Roads

India has one of the world’s largest two-wheeler markets, making motorcycle and scooter safety an important part of the country’s road-safety strategy.

The proposed rules show a growing focus on combining vehicle technology, visibility and protective equipment to make two-wheelers safer. If implemented, these changes could become another step towards improving safety for millions of Indian riders and other road users.
